A great number of us spend a lot of time worrying about appearances. “Keeping up with the Joneses”, keeping up appearances, making it, whatever. Doesn’t matter what it’s called, it’s exactly the same.
It’s wearing a mask in the hopes that it will appease the tribe and bring favors, fortune, friends, and lovers. It hollows us out and leaves us poorer for the same reasons that we feel disappointment. It’s all pretense and pretend, nothing more.
Here’s the Zen-like simplicity of the fix, the “patch” if you will. It’s dead-simple and all it requires is a bit of mental flexibility and some clever re-alignment of your perspective.
Your skin color doesn’t matter. Your hair style doesn’t matter. Your gender, sexuality, clothes, home, transportation, profession, hobbies, whatever–means fuck-all to the people waiting for your authentic self to show-up. It doesn’t matter that the clothes you are wearing are dorky, your interests run into the eccentric, or that you do (or consequently don’t) do something that everyone else is doing.
The people that mind don’t matter, and the people that matter don’t mind at all. So take off the mask, clean off the makeup, ditch the expensive wardrobe, and lose the attitudes. Because we’re all waiting for you. The real, authentic, wacky, wild, lovable, beautiful, radiant, transcendent you. You don’t need anything else besides your most authentic and wonderful self.
Because you are enough.
